Recap five big talking points from Collingwood’s win over Brisbane

DID Magpie Levi Greenwood go too far with his tagging effort against Dayne Zorko?

The star Lions was recovering after a knock during the third quarter when Greenwood made his way over to his opponent and gave him a nudge.

The action didn’t impress Paul Roos, who said it was time to “cut that garbage out of the game.”

STAT RECAP: WHO STOOD TALL FOR MAGPIES?

“It’s interesting that players during the week talk about, ‘we don’t want to see this’…, yet we continue to see this stuff on game day,” Roos said on Fox Footy.

“It’s about time that players stood up for themselves and cut that garbage out.”

ANY CHANCE OF SOME PRESSURE, PIES?

When someone asks what ‘not coming to play’ means, reach for the tape of this one.

The only thing more surprising than Collingwood’s bruise-free opening was that it didn’t absolutely cripple them.

The Lions had 14 of the first 15 inside 50s, but a return of 2.4 and another out on the full let the slow-starting Pies off the hook.

Despite the one-way traffic, Buckley’s boys had one tackle in the first six minutes and a pressure rating 30 below the AFL average after 15 minutes.

Yet the Pies’ makeshift backline deserves credit — keeping the Lions to 3.4 (22) after a first quarter in which the visitors had a staggering 22 entries.

CUE GROANS

Not many things irritate a footy fan more than the rushed snap from a player with a set shot in front of goal.

We still don’t get it do we?

Collingwood had their hands full fighting to turn the tide in the second term when Jordan De Goey marked 20m out and close to dead in front.

The Pies’ x-factor forward quickly shuffled off the line and ballooned his snap wide.

It had the black and white hordes demanding to know what was wrong with a drop punt he would slot 99 times out of 100 from there. Or at least compose himself before the attempt.

And as if to salt the wound, a minute later De Goey snuck out the back and, from open play, went with a left foot snap he sprayed to the left.

A HELPING WHISTLE

Was it just one of those things or a directive?

The amount of free kicks paid by non-controlling umpires was certainly noticeable last night.

There were 4-5 in the first half and another in the third term as Levi Greenwood was awarded one at a stoppage.

Unsurprisingly, most were at stop-ball situations where it can be hard for umps to see through the crowd.

If it’s the right decision and made without confusion, we’re all for it.

AISH LOOKING FOR A HOLE

The Lions had made a blistering start, but the Pies had weathered the storm.

That was until the final minute of the first term when James Aish had marked on the back end of the centre square.

In an effort to go back behind the mark, Aish’s rushed attempt to kick wide was smothered by Cam Rayner.

The first-year Lion pounced on the ground ball, brushed Aish off easily, then won another one-on-one and kept his feet to feed Daniel McStay for a team-lifting goal.
