There was a scare at Collingwood pre-season training on Friday when Nick Daicos gave a concussion prone teammate a crunching tackle that could have ended a whole lot worse.

During a fierce training session, Daicos grabbed Nathan Murphy and brought him to ground head first in an awkward tackle that could well have got the young Magpie suspended if it happened during the season.

Murphy wasn’t in a good way and Daicos was immediately concerned for his teammate, who was momentarily dazed and briefly stepped away from the training session.

Thankfully he returned to training but it was a scare for the defender who has a history of head knocks and was cleared to continue playing football by a concussion panel last month.

The panel recommended Sydney’s Paddy McCartin retire after he had previously suffered nine concussions in his career – including eight while playing at St Kilda.

Murphy, 24, suffered his 10th concussion in the first quarter of the AFL Grand Final and was substituted out of the game.

Collingwood defeated the Brisbane Lions by four points in a thrilling finale as the Magpies capped of a season of scintillating football.

Daicos and Magpies fans will be breathing a sigh of relief Murphy wasn’t concussed from the tackle.

Seven’s AFL reporter Mitch Cleary wrote on X: “Nick Daicos lucky this tackle was in January and not August. Great that Nathan Murphy was able to return to training shortly after.”

Murphy emerged as one of the AFL’s more underrated players in recent seasons, forming a formidable defensive partnership with Collingwood captain Darcy Moore.

Collingwood fans are salivating at the prospect of the Magpies going back-to-back after the club shared footage of Jordan De Goey in fine form during a pre-season hitout.

Collingwood’s director of coaching Brendon Bolton shows off a moment of pure brilliance from de Goey to the playing group.

The footage begins at the centre bounce with De Goey pouncing on the ball as it falls over the back of the two ruckmen.

As he collects the ball off the turf he tucks it under his right arm as he fends off one hapless defender.

In a flash he shifts the ball to under his left arm pit as he extends his right arm out to shrug off a second would-be tackler.

He then rolls forward as he feeds a handball out to an open teammate who kicks the ball inside 50.

Not finished there, he gets on the end of another play as the team in white attempt to clear it out.

A handball over his right shoulder finds an open Scott Pendlebury who drives the ball deep inside the 50m arc.
