Lions young gun caught up in wild Sunrise premiership hangover scenes

An AFL young gun was caught up in some live TV chaos as he was called upon for the task no hungover premiership player wants to do.

Fronting up to do media interviews the morning after winning a grand final is the last thing on players’ minds.

Channel 7’s Weekend Sunrise found that out the hard way on Sunday when producers were desperately trying to find a Brisbane Lions player to appear on the program in the early hours of the morning following the team’s 60-point win over the Sydney Swans in the AFL Grand Final.

Hosts Matt Doran and Monique Wright lifted the lid on the mad scramble to get a Lions player to do a live cross during the program.

Doran explained: “To give you an idea how sort of last minute this is all panning out, the Brisbane Lions media manager said ‘yeah yeah, we’ll get you someone, we won the grand final, it’s kind of a big deal, we’ll give you someone, maybe a player, we’ll just see if we can rustle someone up’.”

Glancing down at his watch, Doran added: “That’s supposed to happen in 10 minutes and still crickets.”

Wright quipped: “Perhaps they’ll just bring someone out on their bed.”

Doran kept the gag going, wondering how it was all playing out behind the scenes in the Lions camp.

“I reckon they’ll have someone roaming the hallways, and they’ll go: ‘Can you come and do that?’,” he said.

Eventually, Lions young gun Jaspa Fletcher emerged to do a live cross out the front of the hotel where the team was staying.

Looking slightly weary, the 20-year-old revealed he was faring significantly better than some of his teammates after a big night of celebrations.

“I reckon there’s a few boys rolling in (to the hotel) as breakfast was served this morning,” Fletcher admitted.

After ably completing the interview, Fletcher explained he was coming out of the hotel lift when he was summoned on screen by the team’s media manager.

“Our media manager rolled out to me and said, ‘how you feeling?’ and I said I was probably the best out of some of the boys, and he said: ‘Righto, Sunrise 8.15’.”

The hosts thanked Fletcher for fronting up, with Doran urging him to go tuck into an “eggs benny”.

Fletcher paid tribute to his dad Adrian, who played for the Brisbane Bears and Lions in the 1990s but didn’t achieve premiership glory.

Fletcher is one of Brisbane’s crop of gun young players, along with Norm Smith Medallist Will Ashcroft, Logan Morris, Darcy Wilmot and Kai Lohmann.

Lions fans have plenty to be excited about in the coming years too as a potential dynasty looms.

Ashcroft’s younger brother Levi is set to be drafted by Brisbane under the father-son rule, while star halfback Keidean Coleman will come straight back into the side after recovering from his ACL injury.

This was Brisbane’s sixth consecutive finals campaign and they broke through for a first premiership in 21 years after last year’s grand final loss.

There’s no reason why the Lions can’t keep contending in the years to come.
