Herald Sun Footy Podcast: Lauren Wood, Michael Warner, Scott Gullan and Jon Anderson on the big footy issues

He’s a fan favourite, but Jon Anderson couldn’t find a spot for Dylan Grimes in his best Richmond team of the past 50 years. And he’s not the only flag hero who missed out. SEE THE TEAM

How do you value the past three years of Tiger dominance versus a decade of success almost half a century ago?

That was the almost impossible question senior Herald Sun footy writer Jon Anderson had to try to answer when he picked the best Richmond team of the past 50 years.

That time span stretched from the fearsome Tigers outfit that won the 1973-4 and 1980 premierships, followed by decades in the wilderness before roaring back to claim two of the past three flags.

On the latest episode of the Herald Sun Footy Podcast, Ando said he leaned more to the deeds of the past with club legends such as Francis Bourke, Ian Stewart and Royce Hart automatic inclusions.

The entire backline of Ando’s team played in that era apart from five-time All-Australian Alex Rance. That means there was no room for current-day heroes Dylan Grimes and Bachar Houli.

Shane Edwards was another player unlucky to miss the cut although the modern Tigers had one win with Ando picking Jack Riewoldt at full-forward over Michael Roach, who kicked 112 goals in 1980.
