CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner is “not surprised” the AFL is considering Darwin as one of two hubs to restart the season.

Mr Gunner told the NT News: “I’ve made it clear that I will do whatever it takes to keep Territorians safe, that remains my priority.

“Because we’ve been so successful, I’m not surprised the AFL is considering this as an option.

“The AFL would need to guarantee safety, just as we have done. Our people always come first.”

AFLNT CEO Stuart Totham said: “Obviously we’re in the mix to host a series of matches in Darwin and of course that’s good news.”

“But the AFL is looking at a broad range of options and we’re just one of those, with mid-June a possible date.

“Time will tell what the final outcome is, but we’re certainly excited at the prospect of hosting AFL clubs up here.’’
