Cats legend Gary Ablett Jr is auctioning off his 2009 match-worn AFL premiership jersey in a bid to raise funds for a charity he holds “really close to our hearts”.

The Geelong jumper, still covered in grass stains from the win over St Kilda, has not been washed since game day and is expected to attract thousands of bidders.

Ablett said he and his wife Jordan wanted to raise funds for Compassion Australia through Lloyds Auctions, helping out disadvantaged mums and babies around the world.

“It was a really hard decision to make,” Ablett said on the Front Bar.

“The plan was to pass the jumper down to our kids but we decided we would auction it off and try to raise funds for a cause that is really close to our hearts.

“With the journey that Jordy and I have been on with Levi and just the care we’ve received, the access that we have to the specialists and hospitals, to know mums and babies living in poverty, the first year of a child’s life is so critical to survival.

“We just felt we needed to do something about that.”

The jersey holds additional value, with Ablett winning the 2009 Brownlow Medal the same season as claiming his second premiership with the Cats, adding to his legacy as one of the game’s greatest ever players.

Cats premiership player Patrick Dangerfield auctioned off his 2022 jersey, with the winning bid collecting $19,500, with Ablett’s jersey expected to exceed that price tag.

Also up for auction is the chance to have lunch with Ablett or an exclusive kick-to-kick experience with the aim to raise as many funds as possible for Compassion Australia.
