AFL Round 3 teams: Jack Steven to make Geelong debut, three premiership Bulldogs return

An injury has opened the door for Jack Steven to make his Cats’ debut a month after he was stabbed. But Essendon has suffered late injuries and Melbourne has made a massive call on a former captain. SEE THE UPDATED ROUND 3 TEAMS

Jack Steven will play his first game for Geelong against Carlton on Saturday night.

The four-time St Kilda best-and-fairest winner was named as an emergency on Thursday night but the Cats were forced to make a late change on Friday.

Brandan Parfitt has withdrawn from the 22-man squad with hamstring soreness, and Steven was added to the team.

Steven suffered a stab wound in an incident late last month and Geelong had planned to ease him into the season, but the Parfitt injury has brought forward his first senior appearance for his new club.

In other late team news, Essendon has lost skipper Dyson Heppell for its clash against Melbourne with a serious ankle injury. Orazio Fantasia is also out.

Melbourne dropped former skipper Nathan Jones as forward Kysaiah Pickett returned from a COVID-19 suspension while Fremantle has named Jesse Hogan and Stephen Hill.

Adelaide’s tough start to the season got even worse with defender Wayne Milera set to miss two months after having foot surgery. He had been named in the squad to face Gold Coast on Sunday.

Last night, GWS antagonist Toby Greene was ruled out of Friday night’s clash with the Western Bulldogs.

Knee soreness has sidelined Greene in a move that might mean a few less sparks between the bitter rivals.

Greene was the enforcer for GWS in last year’s 58-point elimination final win over the Bulldogs, going after Marcus Bontempelli.

Greene copped a $7500 fine at the AFL tribunal after vigorously rubbing the face and pulling the hair of the Western Bulldogs midfielder.

“Toby’s unfortunately got a bit of soreness behind his knee,” GWS coach Leon Cameron said.

“Obviously we would have loved him to run out with us this week but we just couldn’t risk it on a five day break.

“He’ll most likely be alright for next week but only time will tell with that.”

Zac Langdon returns for the Giants, while 2019 No.4 draft pick Lachie Ash is poised to make his AFL debut.

Midfielder Tom Liberatore is set to play his first AFL game since Round 20 last year for the Bulldogs, while Toby McLean and Zaine Cordy also come into the side.

Ryan Gardner, Billy Gowers and Pat Lipinski were all omitted for the Bulldogs.

Collingwood has recalled livewire forward Jaidyn Stephenson for tomorrow’s clash with St Kilda as the Magpies look to boost their attacking firepower.

Stephenson joins hard-nosed midfielder Rupert Wills in returning for Collingwood, with Jack Madgen and Josh Thomas both omitted to make way.

The Magpies kicked just five goals against Richmond in their Round 2 draw last Thursday.

“Jaiydn has done pretty well over the last couple of weeks, especially his hitout last Wednesday,” Buckley said.

“Our biggest issue (against Richmond) wasn’t in our front six or our forwards, it was largely how we set up the field and how we were defending the field which

“I think Jaidyn would have been another frustrated forward in the second half of last week’s game but, having said that, he’s earned his opportunity.”

Both Stephenson and Wills were part of Collingwood’s finals campaign last year.

The Saints have made just one change for the clash, with Jonathon Marsh replacing injured skipper Jarryn Geary.

Geelong heads into its match with Carlton tomorrow unchanged.

The Blues have brought in defender Tom Williamson and utility Jack Silvagni to replace Nic Newman (knee) and Darcy Lang (omitted).
