Ash Johnson’s quest to get back into Collingwood’s senior side has been dealt a major blow after he was ruled out indefinitely with a fractured fibula.
Johnson, who played three matches last season, injured his left leg in a VFL practice game on Friday.
He is the second forward to be dealt a setback in a VFL practice game after Essendon’s Peter Wright injured his ankle last weekend.
Collingwood general manager Charlie Gardiner said Johnson required surgery.
“This is disappointing news for Ash who has enjoyed a strong start to the year,” he said.
“Ash sustained the injury during our club’s VFL pre-season game yesterday afternoon. He is expected to undergo surgery next week and will unfortunately spend an extended period of time on the sidelines as he recovers.
“This is obviously a significant setback, but Ash remains in good spirits all things considered and has the full support of our medical team and wider program.”
Johnson is out of contract at the end of 2025.
