Carlton pre-season news: Nic Newman suffers serious knee injury at training

Nic Newman will miss Carlton’s 2025 season after injuring his knee at training on Friday in a mammoth blow to the Blues’ premiership ambitions.

Carlton has suffered another serious injury blow with gun defender Nic Newman out for the season with a ruptured patella tendon.

The Herald Sun on Friday revealed Newman would miss the 2025 campaign with the injury he sustained at training yesterday.

The backman limped from the track early on Friday and was sent for scans which confirmed he would spend the season on the sidelines.

It is a huge setback for the Blues who were desperate to improve their injury rates this season amid significant changes in their fitness department.

Newman, who finished runner up in the club’s best and fairest in 2024, was one of the best small defenders in the game last year.

He is also one of the most respected and popular players at the club.

His absence is a shattering blow for the Blues after losing key midfielder Sam Walsh to a hamstring injury this week.

Football boss Brad Lloyd said Newman required surgery.

“We are all very disappointed for Nic and our focus is on his recovery,” Lloyd said.

“He will soon undergo surgery to repair his patella, and from there he will enter into a rehabilitation program.

“Nic is the ultimate professional with an outstanding work ethic, he understands the process and will be well supported as he attacks his rehab.

“Nic is a leader and highly regarded at this club, he’s someone who looks after his teammates on and off the field.

“ The whole club will wrap its arms around Nic as we support him on his road to recovery.”
