AFL caller Brian Taylor has brutally roasted his co-commentator live on air for suggesting there was a “jumper clash” in Hawthorn’s clash with St Kilda on Saturday.

St Kilda had their noses in front for most of the game but Hawthorn came from nowhere to kick the last five goals of the game to snatch a 88 (12.16) to 78 (12.6) win.

For the second week in a row, St Kilda wore their Indigenous guernsey in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The jersey features three thick vertical stripes of black, red and yellow, with the yellow replacing St Kilda’s usual white stripe to resemble the Aboriginal flag.

On Triple M, sideline reporter Jay Clark thought the Saints jersey clashed with Hawthorn’s predominantly yellow strip.

“A question for you — have we got a jumper clash out there? There’s a lot of yellow on both the jumpers,” Clark said.

But he was quickly put in his place by Brian Taylor, who thought the two teams were easily distinguishable. He proceeded to give Clark a classic roasting.

“One’s got a strip of yellow and one is all yellow,” Taylor quipped.

“Quite a lot of difference I would have thought. It’s got quite a lot of red and black as well. If you’re having trouble ‘Jay Z’ we’ll let you know who’s got it (the ball).

“Jesus Christ Jay Z. I tell you what, the whole of Australia just whingeing and moaning and crying about every bloody thing. Everyone wants a handout, we’ve got no money, we’re broke.

“I don’t know whether you’ve noticed Jay Z — one’s got black shorts, one’s got white.”

Taylor said saying the two jerseys were similar was “like comparing a German tank with a speedboat”.

Taylor’s co-commentators agreed with him, with James Brayshaw adding: “Why do I get the feeling Jay Z regrets those words as soon as they came out. They might come back to haunt him, the jumper clash.”

Hawthorn claimed its most stirring win of the season on the back of one of the best individual performances of 2023 from captain James Sicily.

The Hawks looked shot when Dan Butler put the Saints up by 20 points early in the last quarter but slammed on the last five goals of the game to run over the top of St Kilda by 10-points.

They had been the better side all afternoon and had they taken their chances in front of goal would’ve smashed the Saints. The Hawks had 28 scoring shots and eight shots that didn’t register a score.

When it looked like they had kicked themselves out of it they got their lift from skipper Sicily, who the Saints had no answer for.

He had an extraordinary 21 intercept possessions as he picked St Kilda’s attacks off at will and then set up forays forward with 628m gained.

Their young midfield put the Saints to the sword with Jai Newcombe (30 disposals), Will Day (30) and Conor Nash (27) blowing the likes of Jack Steele, Jack Sinclair and Seb Ross out of the water.Sicily was best on ground by a country mile at halftime and continued his red-hot form into the second half despite an incident sure to be scrutinised by the MRO.

The Hawthorn captain compiled a half of footy most key defenders would be lucky to have in a game with 23 disposals, 300m gained, 11 intercepts and seven score involvements.

The 28-year-old’s performance should’ve led the Hawks to a huge halftime lead but for wasted opportunities in front of goal.

It wasn’t all rosy for Siciliy though, with a high hit on young St Kilda forward Anthony Caminiti to be scrutinised by the MRO, however, the Saint bounced straight back up which will help Sicily.
