Your complete club-by-club look at the AFL Women’s sign and trade period, plus who has signed on for 2021

Kicking goals from your loungeroom will never be as relevant as it will when the AFLW stages its its first-ever virtual draft in October, as it navigates a new world dealing with coronavirus restrictions.

The AFL will stage its first-ever virtual draft in October with the next generation of AFL Women’s players to learn their fate from their loungerooms.

The AFL will stage the 2020 AFLW draft on October 6 via video conference, the draft order finalised on Friday.

AFLW boss Nicole Livingstone said unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures, with the league to remain flexible in its arrangements as it continues to navigate the effects of COVID-19.

“These are unprecedented times and this year has presented many unique challenges across all levels of football,” she said.

Nicole Livingstone says this year has presented unique challenges across all levels of football.

“The collaboration from all AFLW clubs throughout this period of time is to be commended and has been a defining factor in enabling us to plan for the future.

“There has been great momentum for AFLW and while the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft will look different, we know it will still recognise and celebrate the accomplishments of so many talented young women.”

“We are all excited to see what the next generation of footballers will bring to the NAB AFLW competition in 2021.”

The league is endeavouring to have clubs start their preseason in the usual late-November slot, and has expressed its commitment to the 2021 competition.

It has also committed to no change to the current AFLW collective bargaining agreement or football department cap for next season, with AFL chairman Richard Goyder affirming in June that the women’s competition was an area of growth for the game and that it should not be subject to any reductions for next season.

ULTIMATE AFLW TRADE GUIDE: WHO YOUR CLUB GAINED AND LOST

Trades have taken a back seat to re-signings as teams look to lock in their AFL Women’s lists for 2021.

And the best player in 2020 has penned a contract extension that will see her in navy blue until at least the end of 2022.

Madison Prespakis, who claimed the league’s rising star award in 2019 before claiming the game’s top honours as the AFLW best and fairest player in 2020, on Monday signed for an additional season and said “pre-season cannot come around quick enough” after AFLW04 was cut short by COVID-19.

“I’ve loved my first two years with this club, my teammates, coaches and our incredible members and supporters, I can’t wait for the next two,” Prespakis said.

“What we have built as a football club over the last two years has been special. I enjoy every minute I’m at the club and that is because of the incredible culture we have created together.

“I am extremely driven to work as hard as I possibly can because I know what we can achieve together as a group.

“I want to give our members and supporters the success they deserve, and the success we are all craving.

“Pre-season cannot come around quick enough.”
