North Melbourne star Jasmine Garner named 2025 AFLPA MVP
Ahead of its shot at history, North Melbourne continues to scoop the individual award pool, with Jasmine Garner claiming yet another AFLPA MVP award.
North Melbourne continues to scoop the individual award pool ahead of its tilt at history, with star midfielder Jasmine Garner recognised as the league’s most valuable player for the third time.
Garner was voted by her peers and recognised at the AFL Players’ Association event on Tuesday evening, matching the record set by Western Bulldogs men’s player Marcus Bontempelli and behind only two-time Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett who has won the award four times.
The Kangaroos skipper – who will on Saturday lead her team into a grand final for the first time after she was appointed ahead of this season – averaged 27 disposals, six tackles and five clearances per game.
She also kicked 20 goals.
“It’s a really nice award to win,” Garner told this masthead.
“To be respected by the opposition I play against is massive. Obviously I’m super competitive, but I also want to be respected as well. To be voted in by them to be the MVP for the year, I’m absolutely honoured.
“That’s a very special award to win.”
But most importantly, she said, she hasn’t had to change.
“They’re all different in a way,” she said of the three gongs.
“Obviously this one with the captaincy has been really good. Something different for me. I’m still learning and growing. You feel like when you’re captain, you have to be the loudest. And I’m totally different to Kearns (former captain Emma Kearney).
“But the best thing is, the girls have just embraced who I am and I’ve been able to just stay the same. That’s really worked for me and I’ve loved it.
“I’ve still got a lot of things to work on but also doing a lot of things right.”
Garner’s teammate and AFLW best and fairest winner Ash Riddell finished second in the players’ voting, ahead of Eagle Ella Roberts, Melbourne captain Kate Hore and Cats young gun Georgie Prespakis.
