What the Demons need to fix in 2023

Brisbane has told three players they are not required next season.

AFL clubs are preparing for a hectic player exchance period by conducting exit meetings and making some tough list decisions.

Lions Ely Smith, Mitch Cox and Deividas Uosis are the latest to receive the bad news, joining Mitch Robinson as Brisbane delistings.

Smith was Brisbane’s first pick in the 2018 draft but injuries cursed his four years on the list.

Cox joined the club as a mature-age recruit via the supplemental selection period last summer, while Lithuanian-born Uosis joined as a Category B Rookie out of Ireland.

“It’s an unfortunate time of year when changes must be made due to pressure for list spots,” said Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly.

“All three are extremely hard-working individuals who represented themselves with great professionalism and diligence during their time at the Club.

“We thank them for their service and wish them all the best for the future.”

Earlier, Robinson posted a photo of himself from the elimination final win over Richmond, Robinson said “this was my last photo as a Lion”.

“Happy beating the Tiges but sad knowing it would be my last at the Gabba,” said Robinson, who played 147 games for Brisbane and was out of contract.

“Devastated that Fages (coach Chris Fagan) wouldn’t allow me to announce this in person to the supporters and my teammates, but I guess that’s footy.

“It’s been an absolute privilege pulling on the Fitzroy and Lions jumper!

“Thank you all for the last 8 (sic) years, I’ll never forget the love you all showed me, Emma and my kids.

“I left it all out there every single game, I love you all.”

TRIPLE-CLUB CAT CALLS TIME IN GF WEEK

Two three-club players have announced their retirement, with Geelong veteran Shaun Higgins and Melbourne forward Mitch Brown calling time on their careers.

Higgins arrived at the Cats in the 2020 trade period alongside Jeremy Cameron and Isaac Smith but just five of his 23 matches as a Cat came this year, with one of those as the medical substitute.

The 34-year-old conceded he’d done “everything he can” to put his name forward for a call-up in the back-half of the season, saying he was comfortable with the effort he had put in as he turns his attention to supporting his team on grand final day.

Cut down by injuries early in his career at the Western Bulldogs, the classy first-round draft pick played more than 100 games for both the Dogs and North Melborne, finishing his glittering career with 229 goals from 260 games.

Brown, meanwhile, kicked 74 goals in 78 matches for Geelong, Essendon — where he arrived as a top-up player in 2016 — and then finally for Melbourne.

The 32-year-old bowed out with two-goals in Casey’s VFL grand final win on Sunday.
