AFL 2025: North Melbourne young gun George Wardlaw isn’t focusing on win-loss ‘rabbit hole’

North Melbourne is prioritising progress over end results, highlighting its positive finish to its clash with Port Adelaide last weekend.

North Melbourne young gun George Wardlaw says the Kangaroos are steering clear of the win-loss “rabbit hole” and focusing on the positives from their clash with Port Adelaide.

The Roos were staring down the barrel of another heavy defeat at quarter time on Saturday but clawed back from a 29-point deficit to get within seven points.

The positive performance followed two disappointing fade outs against Gold Coast and Carlton.

Wardlaw says North Melbourne acknowledges the end result but prioritises the “small portions” it shows.

“Just speaking to the boys and the energy around the club, we’re excited to play football, just whenever and however it is,” he said.

“Thursday night is a great opportunity for us, we’re really keen to back up our performance against Port and hopefully get over the line.

“It’s in small proportions, it’s a long-term sort of thing, it may not show in wins and losses but like the performance we saw last week, it comes in small portions.

“It’s important, absolutely important, but when it isn’t happening you just can’t focus on it otherwise you go down a rabbit hole.

“Internally, although we of course acknowledge it, it’s about the things that can help the process of turning those losses into wins.”

North Melbourne vice-captain Harry Sheezel came under fire on Monday night for his damage with the ball.

Wardlaw threw his support behind Sheezel, saying “the football he’s playing is out of this world”.

“If I could play half as good as Harry’s been, I would be pretty happy,” he said.

“Harry is well-respected by everyone at the club, not just his teammates but everyone top to bottom.

“He’s an amazing bloke and an amazing footballer, I think he’s started the season well.

“He set that standard for himself with his first couple of years, the football he’s playing is out of this world, so whatever he does now is going to get analysed.

“Like I said, we love Harry so much and back him 100 per cent.”
