AFL 2022: The Davey twins, Alwyn jnr and Jayden, to follow in dad’s footsteps at Essendon as father-son prospects

The Davey twins, Alwyn jnr and Jayden, are one step closer to joining Essendon after nominating their dad’s old club as father-son prospects.

Bombers happy with Weideman

The Davey twins officially want to be Bombers, just like their father Alwyn snr.

Alwyn jnr and Jayden Davey have nominated Essendon as father-son prospects ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

The Bombers now have until November 21 – a week before the draft – to lodge their nomination with the AFL, which would enable them to match any rival bid for the pair.

Alwyn jnr is a potential top-20 draft pick after starring for Vic Metro, Oakleigh Chargers and Xavier College this year, but it is unclear where Jayden will land after sitting out the season recovering from a second knee reconstruction.

Essendon will hope Alwyn jnr’s bid comes after its second draft selection, currently No.22, but the Bombers could opt to trade that pick for later ones to still have something left once they match.

He is blessed with lightning speed and can play in the midfield and up forward.

“I’d be proud (to play for Essendon) but my dad would be very proud as well to see me go from watching from the change rooms growing up to playing for the same club as he did,” Alwyn jnr said previously.

“I just can’t wait for that if it does actually happen and we pull it off.”

The exciting Davey brothers have boarded in Melbourne at Xavier College in recent years and been part of Essendon’s father-son program.

Alwyn snr played exactly 100 games and kicked 120 goals for the Bombers between 2007 and 2013, while his brother Aaron made 178 appearances for Melbourne.

Brisbane also has multiple incoming father-son eligible players with likely No.1 selection Will Ashcroft, Jaspa Fletcher and Darryl McDowell-White jnr set to become Lions.

Max Michalanney is linked to Adelaide under the same rule and is as good as certain to be gone by the second round at the latest, while Cooper Harvey, son of North Melbourne legend Brent, will follow in his dad’s footsteps.
