Sydney defender Jake Lloyd has ended the intrigue about his contract delay, signing a fresh three-year deal that all-but seals him as a Swan for life.
There was never any suggestion Lloyd was going anywhere but Sydney will be pleased to have secured an important player until at least the end of the 2025 season.
He was an unrestricted free agent, so could have joined a rival club without needing to be traded.
The 29-year-old played his 200th game in the Swans’ grand final defeat to Geelong and has barely missed a match since breaking into the senior side in 2014, two years after being a rookie selection.
That was evidenced in him being the quickest to reach the 150-game milestone in club history.
Lloyd is a dual best and fairest winner – in 2018 and 2020 – and was short-listed for All-Australian honours in the first of those years.
“The club took a chance on me as a young kid 10 years ago and to be signed on for another three years, me and my family are stoked,” Lloyd said.
“To be a one-club player for the Swans means a lot. The opportunity they gave me as a young kid to fulfil my dreams at the elite level; it really does mean a lot.”
“We’ve got such a young and exciting group (and) I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead for such a good group.”
Sydney’s football boss Charlie Gardiner said Lloyd would “continue to play an integral role” in the club’s fortunes.
“Jake is a highly respected player and has been a key component of our team for a long period of time,” Gardiner said.
“He is an ultimate professional and sees the game as well as any player in the competition.”
Lloyd has averaged 20 or more disposals in each of the past seven seasons.
