Wanderers delivered a milestone victory for one of their stalwarts in what became a wet and sodden affair against the Darwin Buffaloes.
The Muk Muks marked the 100th game of Jerome Motlop with a more assured display than their last meeting against the Double Blues that also won the side the Nungalinya Cup.
When these sides last faced off Wanderers failed to scored a goal in the first half, but this time they dominated that period six goals to two.
It was an indication of their dominance across the ground from the midfield scraps to defensive pressure that forced more than a couple Buffalo shots to go out on the full.
And that early dominance became Wanderers’ buffer when the rain poured down on Cazalys Arena turning every contest into a scrap and allowing the Muk Muks to see it out 7.8 (50) to 4.4 (28).
Wanderers kicked things into gear swiftly and it wasn’t long before they were celebrating a first quarter goal for Motlop, alongside majors for Bryce Walse and Billy Shanks.
Cody Leggett was at his dangerous best gathering the plenty of the pill while Tyler Phillips ensured first use ball out of the ruck battle.
Lennon Marlin was another who impressed in just his third game of the season while Ben McGuire was dynamic in the forward line
Meanwhile, the Double Blues failed to make an impression on the scoreboard in the first quarter and only found their moment when Adam Sambono knocked it through.
But Wanderers were quick to respond with Tom Worthley firing through from the 50m and Frazer Bradley getting involved plenty.
Then as the second quarter wore on the wind picked up into a gust spiralling the ball both from kicks and umpire ball ups and then came the torrential rains that caused issues.
The sides were slow to come out of half time and the third quarter was a proper scrap with very little to show for it but another scoreless period for the Buffaloes.
Playing-coach Phil Wills caused some excitement when he drilled an early one in for the Double Blues in the final term while Nathan Denes was hard in the contest causing issues.
But still Wanderers kept their noses clean, did what they needed to do and pulled out the victory in what was a more complete performance they’ve been threatening to have for a couple of weeks.
PREVIEW
A mid-season encounter with the potential to stop one team’s season in its tracks awaits the Darwin Buffaloes and Wanderers in a big Friday night NTFL clash.
With the two sides sitting seventh and eight on the ladder respectively, a defeat in this Round 10 meeting could spell the end of finals aspirations.
Every moment of the match will be streamed live and free from 8pm by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long NTFL coverage.
WHY TO WATCH
The Double Blues survived a tough Palmerston fight back last weekend to achieve their first win since Round 2 and keep themselves in touch with the top five sides.
Their three wins to date have come against the bottom two but given the competitiveness of the top six those victories have kept them in touching distance.
Buffaloes were best served by youngster Tashaun Wright last time out, who showed both in his defensive work and an unexpected goal that he will be one to watch.
For him the likes of tried and trusted veterans of the side Jarrod Stokes and Bradley Stokes have inspired him to play in a way he enjoys.
“There’s some really inspiring guys in this group such as Jarrod and Bradley Stokes who give us younger guys advice and inspire me to play the way I do,” Wright said following the Palmerston game.
“It’s really good for us to get back on the winner’s list, we all feel we’ve really improved in the past couple of weeks since what happened against Saints.”
The focus now needs to be on building momentum and a rare fixture against another side below them on the ladder in Wanderers is a chance to score a second win on the bounce.
Though the Muk Muks won’t want to roll over in a match that for them is an important opportunity to get back on the winner’s list.
Frazer Bradley is a goal threat but the real powerhouse of this year’s Wanderers side is Cody Leggett and should he pull off some midfield dominance the rest of the team may well come along too.
