PALMERSTON midfielder Chris Williams and Southern Districts defender Lionel Ogden were the big stats winners in Round 1 of the NTFL season.
Williams had 23 kicks and six handballs in his debut game for the Magpies since crossing from the Darwin Buffaloes in the off season.
Ogden was highly effective across half back for the Crocodiles, totalling 21 kicks and eight handballs while hanging on to four intercept marks.
And while those two players ended up on the losing side, Williams’ Magpies went down by 65 points to a fired up Waratah and Ogden’s Districts lost in the final minutes to Wanderers, it was a different story at premiers Nightcliff and the Darwin Buffaloes.
Long kicking Tigers defender Daniel Bowles grabbed 26 disposals in his side’s 53-point win over St Mary’s, his 19 kicks and seven handballs combining well with his six marks.
Nathaniel Paredes led the St Mary’s charge with 23 disposals, his 20 kicks and three handballs keeping the Green Machine in the game for long periods.
Buffaloes skipper Jarrod Stokes led from the front in his side’s 64-point demolition of the Tiwi Bombers.
Stokes’ 27 disposals included 17 kicks and 10 handballs in a complete game for the team’s leader as the Buffaloes look to get involved in another finals series.
Other big individual stats on the opening round of the season included Waratah’s Josh Carmichael’s 25 against the Magpies (15 kicks and 10 marks) and teammate Dylan Collis’ 24 touches in the same match.
Round 1 winners Wanderers got maximum value from their first gamer Shaun Mannagh who got hold of the ball 24 times against Southern Districts.
