Long-time Mermaid Beach business Snooker World is considering a move south.

A mainstay of the former Mermaid Beach cinema site for more than three decades, the business is eyeing off relocating to a site on Burleigh Heads’ Kortum Drive near Marymount Catholic Primary School.

Plans have been lodged with the Gold Coast City Council for a 1617.7 sqm venue in a building formerly known as The Beach furniture shop, which would be fitted out to become a pool hall and private members club.

According to plans lodged with the Gold Coast City Council it would have 25 pool tables with a bar serving food and drinks, while 229.5 sqm will be set aside for a showroom where sporting ware, including tables, will be sold.

They ask the council to allow it to operate seven days a week, opening as late as midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

“General operations of Snooker World currently include club nights for the Gold Coast 8 Ball Association, NDIS sessions that occur between 4pm and 7pm currently two nights a week and general use of the pool hall by members and casual patrons,” a letter lodged with council reads.

“Potentially one to two larger events/competitions may occur annually, however these do not form part of the regular operations of this use.

“The proposed members lounge at the rear of the hall provides a separate area that provides for members’ events and VIP bookings.

“This area is for use within the normal operating hours and only during use of the pool hall.”

The old Mermaid Beach cinema site, the pool hall’s long-time home, is currently on the market as part of a lot including the former Sizzlers and KFC buildings.

It is being marketed by Canford Estate Agents.

The existing building was developed in the early 1980s.
