Territorian Kiara Petterson wins Queensland Law Society First Nations Student Award 2024

A Territorian working on a law degree on the Gold Coast has won a major award through the Queensland Law Society.

Bond University student Kiara Petterson has received the 2024 Queensland Law Society First Nations Student Award.

Kiara Petterson is one step closer to realising her dream to become a strong legal advocate for the Territory’s First Nations people.

The 23-year-old Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu woman was awarded the Queensland Law Society’s First Nations Student Award.

Ms Petterson is a descendant of the Tarnikini skin group from the Tiwi Islands, the Wardaman group from the Katherine region, and the Wagadagam people from the Torres Strait Islands.

She launched her legal career with a Diploma of Legal Studies at Bond University in 2022, transitioning to a Bachelor of Laws in 2023.

Ms Petterson said she hoped to use her legal knowledge to help people in vulnerable situations.

The passionate advocate has used her time as a student to partake in internships and volunteer roles that best position her to “give back to the local community”.

“These experiences have broadened my perspectives as to what career opportunities are available upon completing my studies,” she said.

“Currently I am interested in commercial law and would appreciate applying the knowledge, skills, and experience I’ve gained to participate in pro bono work.”

Ms Petterson hopes her QLS achievement serves to inspire and open doors for other Indigenous women.

“(The award) represents more of our people getting educated and that is an incredible achievement in itself,” she said.

“The award means a lot to me.

“It acknowledges both the effort I’ve put in and the valuable guidance I’ve received throughout my studies.”
