Nine outstanding Territory teachers, principals, and support staff have been feted at an awards ceremony in Darwin on Friday night, claiming gongs at the NT Government’s annual Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards, coinciding with World Teacher’s Day.
Education and Training Minister Jo Hersey congratulated the winners, saying they did outstanding work developing young people in the Territory into “job-ready school leavers”.
“Today [Friday] is about recognising and celebrating our classroom teachers, early childhood educators, support staff and school leaders for their outstanding work helping our young minds grow and develop the knowledge that they will rely on their entire lives,” she said.
Ms Hersey said the government was especially proud of the geographical dispersal of the awards, with only two of the winners working and residing in Darwin.
“It’s great the awards have a regional focus so we can ensure we recognise the good work happening across the NT,” she said.
“Our CLP government wants to ensure every student gets a good education no matter where they go to school.”
Ms Hersey touted recent reforms to the sector, encouraging teachers to spend longer in the NT, rather than simply cycling through for two or three years.
“The CLP government wants Territory teachers, school leaders and all staff to see working in our schools as a rewarding career,” she said.
“We want to give financial certainty by moving them off short-term contracts so they can confidently put down roots.
“The recent reforms to school budgets provide more financial certainty for schools and enable more positions to be permanent.”
