A Top End school has placed second during a unique Grand Prix held in Queensland last week.

Six NT Christian College students took their hydrogen-powered remote controlled car to the Gold Coast, where they completed a four hour race against the clock – and other pit crews – for a spot on the podium.

The crew led the race for almost three-and-a-half hours, but ultimately finished with silver.

The team – comprised of Ezekiel Kernick, Johan De Guzman, Benedict Sonsie-Daams, Tannum Jones-Materne, Kayden Bourchier, and Michael Jessup – were the first to represent the NT in the annual race.

NTCC principal Luke Willsmore said the students’ achievement was a reflection of their “hard work, dedication, and passion for sustainable technology”.

“We are incredibly proud of our students and their outstanding performance at the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix,” Mr Willsmore said.

Ezekial Kernick – the team’s leader – said the experience was both exciting and stressful for his crew.

“We learned so much about hydrogen technology and teamwork,” he said.

“Coming in second place is a huge honour and motivates us to aim even higher in future competitions.”
