Russell “Rusty” Hopkinson, the drummer Australian rock band You Am I, admits it’s not always easy to get to Darwin as a band.

“It can be kind of expensive,” he said.

But the cost has never stopped the group from trying to return.

“We try to get there whenever we can, we always have a great time playing there,” he said.

As You Am I continue to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their well-known second album, Hi Fi Way, they’ve sweetened the pot for their fans: The tour has been extended, with Mayberry Darwin getting a show on June 14.

“We’re happy to be heading back up that way,” Hopkinson said – sharing it was a no-brainer to head back to the Top end.

“Darwin’s a great town, it’s multicultural, it’s interesting both geographically and historically, and it’s got nice people there; why wouldn’t you want to go there?”

“It’s a very unique place that I think more people should try and get to … I always tell friends of mine from overseas they should maybe go and check out, because it’s not like any other city in Australia.

If there were a song from the album that represented the Northern Territory best, Hopkinson said, it would be Minor Byrd.

“It was written in New Orleans, which has got a similar climate to Darwin in terms of being tropical and sultry,” he said.

“It’s also kind of funky as well.”

Although the band won’t be in Darwin for long, Hopkinson said he hoped to make the most of his time in the city for the band and the fans.

“If you like rock and roll music played by a bunch of middle aged gentlemen who have been around making music for the last 30 odd years, come along and we can guarantee you’ll have a good time,” he said.
