US politics live: Jeffrey Epstein questions remain unanswered as Donald Trump tries to move on
One of the foremost experts on Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case has spoken out about the latest developments.
Welcome to another week in US politics. This live coverage has ended, but do read on for a decent wrap-up of the day.
It was the one-year anniversary of the attempt on President Donald Trump’s life during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and Mr Trump popped up at the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in New Jersey alongside First Lady Melania Trump and the President of football’s governing body, Gianni Infantino.
Mr Trump gestured at the crowd, pumping his fist in an echo of the famous “fight, fight, fight” moment immediately after he was injured in Butler.
The United States is one host nation of next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Elsewhere, two senior figures of the Trump administration are reportedly at each other’s throats, and pushing for each other’s resignation, as the fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein case continues to linger.
Mr Trump defended Attorney-General Pam Bondi over the weekend, publicly wondering why his “boys”, chief among them FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, were antagonising her over the Epstein files.
Ms Bondi previously said the so-called Epstein “client list” was on her desk for review. It later transpired that no such list exists. This has, naturally, raised questions.
Mr Bongino, a former Secret Service agent who grew to fame as a right-wing podcaster before Mr Trump chose him to help run the FBI, is reportedly deeply unhappy with Ms Bondi’s handling of the case.
He reportedly took Friday off work and left Washington D.C. in protest at the situation, and some close to him have briefed the media that he is considering resigning.
The New York Times today cites “Ms Bondi’s allies in the administration”, who “believe Bongino has burned his bridges and needs to leave”.
It notes that Mr Bongino was not mentioned in Mr Trump’s social media post defending Ms Bondi on Saturday, and “that would appear to leave Mr Bongino in the lurch”.
