The Duchess of Sussex has been photographed crying as Queen Elizabeth’s coffin was loaded into a hearse to make it’s way to Windsor Castle.

Meghan Markle, 41, became visibly emotional outside Westminster Abbey as she watched the Queen’s coffin being loaded on to the gun carriage.

She was caught on camera wiping away tears from her face with her gloved hand.

“The Queen … has always been wonderful to me,” she previously told Oprah.

“I just really loved being in her company.”

A photo of the former Suits actress, taken by British photographer Gareth Cattermole, has been branded “one for the history books.”

The portrait was taken from above, showing the Duchess walking by herself inside the church.

Markle was dressed elegantly in a black cape-style dress with high neckline by Stella McCartney paired with a striking broad brimmed hat. She wore a navy blue version of the look to a concert celebrating the Queen’s 92nd birthday at the Royal Albert Hall back in April 2018.

The Duchess also wore a set of pearl-and-diamond earrings gifted to her by the Queen ahead of her the pair’s first solo outing in 2018.

Prince Harry and Markle followed Prince George and Princess Charlotte in the procession, reflecting the line of succession to the throne.

As expected, Prince Harry was dressed in a morning suit rather than his military uniform.

The Sussexes sat directly behind King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort for the service at Westminster Abbey.

They were were seated alongside Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were seated far from the Sussexes, in the front row in the opposite aisle.

In what some royal watchers have perceived as a snub to the Sussexes, Zara Tindall and her brother Peter Phillips were seated in the front row next to the Wales family.

This is despite the fact that the children of Princess Anne are not working royals.

Ahead of the service, Markle appeared tense as she stood next to the Princess of Wales, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

At one point, Catherine appeared to studiously avoid eye contact and looked as if she was turning her back on Markle.

Prince Harry’s face was a study in sadness as he participated in the procession behind the Queen’s coffin, while Markle’s face was largely masked by the broad brim of her dark hat.
