Iran has reportedly fired missiles at a United States military base in Qatar in a dramatic escalation of the conflict.

Officials are monitoring the region for reports of any casualties or damage inflicted after Tehran fired six missiles in retaliation for American strikes on its nuclear facilities.

A senior White House official told the New York Post the Trump administration was “aware of, and closely monitoring, potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar”.

President Donald Trump was scheduled to attend a National Security meeting at the same time reports surfaced that Iran had launched the attack.

Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have closed their airspace as conflict in the region escalates.

It came after Russia described its partnership with Iran as “unbreakable” and announced its ally had a right to defend itself.

Senior Iranian officials were meeting with Russian leaders in the wake of America’s strike that Vladimir Putin said was “unjustified”.

Reuters reported Mr Putin told Iran’s Foreign Minister: “The absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification.”
