A 62-year-old woman has been charged in relation to a fatal crash where one woman died and up to nine more were injured.

An NT Police spokesman on Wednesday morning said the woman would appear in the Alice Springs Local Court on October 16, where she would face six charges in relation to the August 16 crash at Papunya.

The woman has been charged with one count of careless driving causing death, one count of driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and four counts of driving with unrestrained passengers.

It was previously reported the crash involved two vehicles, about 65km from the Tanami Hwy on the Newhaven access road about 1.15pm on that date.

A 43-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene.

It was initially reported that five children aged between five and 10-years-old had also been involved in the crash.

The NT’s road toll stands at 49 for 2024 so far, compared to just 11 this time last year.

Deputy Commissioner Martin Dole on Monday warned NT road users to “pick up your game”.

“I just want to remind Territorians of the fatal five: drinking and drug driving, speeding, seat belts, mobile phones and driving distracted,” he said.

“How many more lives need to be lost before the community wakes up and pays some attention?”
