A driver who allegedly struck Sam Kerr’s grandmother with a car has told a court he “killed the lady, but she revived herself”.
Coral Kerr, 89, was seriously injured when a driver allegedly mounted a curb and hit the great grandmother as she got off a bus at Palmyra, in Perth’s south, on December 27.
The alleged driver Mark John Britt, 63, appeared in the Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.
Mr Britt represented himself in court and told the magistrate he intended to plead not guilty to the charge when asked, but the magistrate told the accused to seek legal advice.
“Well, what happened three days before the incident I locked myself out of the house and didn’t have diabetic medication, my diabetes was 307,” he told the magistrate
“I swerved around, I swerved around.
“I killed the lady, but she revived herself.”
Mr Britt told the court a blood test was taken from him following the incident and he was held for three days because they thought the victim was going to die.
“But she didn’t die,” he said.
“They played that song killer on the road, but I am not a killer on the road.”
The police prosecutor said they wanted to adjourn the matter because they were waiting for the accused’s toxicology reports.
“This is a very serious matter,” he said.
Speaking to media outside of court, Mr Britt said it was a miracle Ms Kerr did not die.
Earlier this week, Ms Kerr’s father Roger Kerr said his mother had suffered several broken bones and required surgery following the incident.
“She’s had both her hips done, her pelvis done, a rod in her knee, two broken ankles,” Mr Kerr told The West Australian.
Ms Kerr’s granddaughter Sam is facing her own legal battle in the UK for allegedly racially harassing a London police officer after a night out.
British police allege Sam and her partner, fellow footballer Kristie Mewis, had been out drinking when a taxi driver drove them to a police station in southwest London.
The driver complained the pair refused to pay clean-up costs after one of them vomited, and that one of them smashed the vehicle’s rear window.
Mr Britt’s bail was extended, he is due to return to court on March 4.
