One man has died while his companion managed to swim to shore after their boat is believed to have capsized off the West Australian coast.

A man has died after his boat is thought to have capsized off the West Australian coast on Friday.

WA Police were notified about 10.35am of a boating incident about 4km off Green Head, between Leeman and Jurien Bay, about 166km south of Geraldton.

It is believed a small boat with two men aged in their 70s on board capsized.

One of the men was able to reach the shore and alert authorities regarding the other man being missing in the water.

His 71-year-old companion was later found dead.

Police launched a marine search operation using state rescue vessels and emergency aircraft.

A helicopter crew spotted the second man’s body, which was recovered from the water.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The time of the initial incident is not yet confirmed.
