WANDERERS surprised everyone but themselves when they ended the six-game winning run of NTFL Women’s Premier League frontrunners the Darwin Buffettes.
The Shekeine De Satge led Eagles came from 13 points down at three quarter-time to inflict the first defeat on the Buffettes this season and get their first win over the double blue jumpers in three years.
Midfielders De Satge, Morgan Johnson and Sophia Mauboy were the best for Wanderers, who moved to third with their 4.8 (32) to 4.6 (30) win.
Coach David Totham said there had been no specific instructions to his players at the three quarter time break.
“It was basically the same message, go out there, give it your best and trust each other because this game can change very quickly,’’ Totham said.
“It was our best win for a few years and puts us in the top four, though in terms of true positions it’s probably a bit early to tell.’’
Waratah jumped back to the top of the ladder with a convincing 39-point win over finals hopefuls PINT at Gardens Oval.
Lisa Roberts and Madison Gissing led the charge for the premiers, who now have a game and 55 percentage points break on the Buffettes who they meet at TIO Stadium next week.
A five-goal haul by St Mary’s star Danielle Ponter steered her side to a 51-point win over Tracy Village, with Sharna Edward producing a best on ground performance for the Saints.
Southern Districts spearhead Ebony Miller kicked 10 goals in her side’s 112-point win over the Big River Hawks in Katherine.
Miller’s goalkicking and Charlie Deegan’s super ruckwork ensured the Crocodiles were always in control in their 17.13 (115) to 0.3 (3) win over the home side.
And Troy Lewer’s Magpies had five less scoring shots than Nightcliff but still beat the much improved Tigers by five points at Palmerston Oval.
Palmerston won a four quarter arm wrestle 7.3 (45) to 5.10 (40) to move to third on the WPL ladder.
