WANDERERS people call Dray Thompson “Mr Consistency’’ for a reason, he gets plenty of the football every week.

The 18-year-old wingman/defender is the Round 16 NT News Rising Star nominee after a stellar performance in his side’s loss to Southern Districts on the weekend.

Thompson has impressed the coaching staff at Wanderers with his work ethic, running from half back and across the middle to provide his forwards with scoring opportunities.

His coach at Wanderers, Shannon Motlop, is a big believer in the Bagot speedster and his ability to play on the inside to win the hard ball and receive the football on the outside.

“Dray’s been our most consistent player among the young blokes, probably more so than blokes who get a lot more attention,’’ Motlop said.

“He works hard every game to get the football and normally does something with it. He was terrific in the last quarter against Districts with his drive from half back in the manner he has played all season.’’

Thompson has been invited to join Thunder’s Academy program, where his ability to contest and smart run and carry are features the program is looking for.

His Wanderers teammate Joel Jeffrey also impressed with his strong marking and creative presenting in front of goals.

Districts had their own consistent performer in defender Brodie Lake, who continues to be one of his side’s best goal stoppers with his reading of the play and clever disposal.

And Brayden Rioli found the ball on a number of occasions for the Tiwi Bombers in their top of the table clash with Nightcliff.

The $500 Rising Star Award is in its 23rd season, boasting past winners like Matthew Whelan and Raphael and Xavier Clarke who all went on to play AFL football.
