THE NT is the only jurisdiction in the country where its police officers are not subject to random drug and alcohol testing, unless they have committed a statutory offence.

There has been a push for legislation to be changed to make sure our cops are not influenced by drugs and alcohol, and the news that two Darwin police officers have been charged with drug offences has renewed the debate.

When asked about it in 2016, NT Police Union President Paul McCue said the majority of Territory police supported internal drug and alcohol testing, but had reservations about police officers being named before being found guilty.
