Rogue senator Lidia Thorpe says she has no regrets about tearing up papers and throwing them at One Nation leader Pauline Hanson … but many aren’t so sure about her actions.
The 51-year-old on Wednesday stormed out of the chamber flipping Ms Hanson the middle finger, declaring she “would do it again”.
The incident followed a bitter row sparked by Ms Hanson questioning the eligibility of independent Senator Fatima Payman to sit in parliament due to her citizenship status.
It ended with Labor and the Coalition joining forces to suspend Ms Thorpe from the Senate until the end of Thursday — the final day of sitting for 2024.
Ms Thorpe said on Thursday morning Ms Hanson’s pursuit against Ms Payman, who has been unable to rescind her Afghan citizenship due to the Taliban government ignoring her request to do so, was an “act of racism”.
“She constantly is, across the floor, spewing racism and disgusting violence towards us and anybody else who is not white,” Ms Thorpe told ABC TV.
“I am not one to stand or sit silent and allow this to happen. I would do it again.”
Ms Thorpe pledged to “continue to disrupt” until racism is “taken seriously”.
Labor senate leader Penny Wong moved the motion on Wednesday evening, saying there had been “multiple instances” of Ms Thorpe making “inappropriate, sometimes abusive” comments toward other senators and “then disrupting proceedings by refusing to withdraw”.
The incident sparked a war of words among readers, with many condemning Ms Thorpe’s actions as the latest in a long line of controversies.
Others questioned how much longer she could remain in her role, while some insisted there are wider issues that need to be resolved.

What a mess

How some of these clowns ever got elected amazes me.

And we are paying these people and that’s how they use their time and our money. Peanuts.

The current parliament has outlived its usefulness. The world has changed significantly but our government system has got worse with useless wasteful senators adding nothing to our system, get rid of them and appoint a few more representatives.
Jill
next election can we have a vote on how we can changed the constitution to remove senators for various reasons
Eric
Senator Payman was the last person on the Labor Party’s WA Senate ticket.
As her citizenship was always unclear she should never have been selected by federal Labor in the first place.
Federal Labor is Responsible for this entire debacle!
Time to go
Amelia
Thorpe and Payman, hopefully their electorate are now that little bit smarter to make sure they don’t get a second term when due to contest another election.
Judith
get rid of Thorpe and Payman.
Good on you Pauline.

Ms Thorpe needs to go. And Ms Hanson should be our next prime minister.

Can someone please tell us what Thorpe and Payman have contributed towards the betterment of Australia in their time in office?
There are wider issues

Nothing to do with race love, just consequences of woeful behaviour.

Perhaps Ms Thorpe should focus on the current state of affairs in the NT. Her people are being brutally beaten and sexually assaulted. The report on the ABC during the week was heart wrenching. She needs to raise this in parliament urgently.

The question must to be asked, as it has been of many others. Do you hold dual citizenship? The reason does not matter, the parliamentary rules need to be the same for all.
Dusty Rose
Well done Pauline, keep up the great work.

You get what you vote for Australia. I would say half the politicians do not deserve to represent us.
