Victoria Police members lose out in dispute over unpaid overtime

A push for Victoria Police to pay back “hundreds of millions of dollars” in unpaid overtime to members has been unsuccessful, with the court siding with the force.

A push for Victoria Police to pay back members for years of unpaid overtime has been unsuccessful.

The Herald Sun revealed last year that the force was facing action on behalf of members who say they were dudded out of hundreds of millions of dollars in overtime.

That related to unpaid time at work putting on and removing kit at the start and finish of shifts.

The push for payment of the extra time emerged during protracted enterprise bargaining between the force and the Police Association.

The Police Association said the result was disappointing but it had been a necessary fight to have.

“Our campaign for members to be paid for all the work they perform has already led to Victoria Police changing its practice and paying employees for tasks that were previously unpaid,” a spokesman said.

The union said it would now take time with its lawyers to “fully digest the ruling and its implications and discuss them with our members.”
