Sydney hospitality billionaire Justin Hemmes has arrived in town, attending the opening of his new Melbourne LB’s Record Bar on Thursday night.

After a month’s delay on its scheduled launch, the Meyers Place vinyl and agave bar — with bar pros Michael and Zara Madrusan — debuted in style with a packed crowd and a party into the early morning.

Hemmes was surrounded by a bevy of beauties including glamorous partner Madeline Holtznagel.

Among the guests at the pre opening drinks night were philanthropist Heloise Pratt, Tabcorp boss Gillon McLachlan and his wife Laura, St Remio’s Trent Knox, Melbourne identities Andy Ryan and Sam Dainty, and socialite Brodie Ryan.

“You know it feels good when people are enjoying themselves and not looking around the room,” Hemmes told the Herald Sun.

“It just feels right and we feel great being here.”

Hemmes’ Merivale empire kicks off its Melbourne invasion at the old Kantay House site which was once home to the much-loved cocktail bar Lily Blacks.

It’s expected Hemmes will install his trademark dining venue Totti’s, which has opened in Lorne, above LB’s.

Inside the original horseshoe bar is surrounded by features including a collection sourced from Melbourne’s independent record stores, curated by Nick van Tiel and brought to life by local music talent and DJs.

“We’re committed to a long-term investment in Melbourne’s hospitality scene and community,’’ Hemmes said.

“We’re looking forward to bringing new energy to this iconic spot with two of the most talented people in the industry. We’ve built LB’s on the foundations of a great bar, with fantastic drinks and music, welcoming service, and a space you’ll (hopefully) never want to leave.”

In February Hemmes snapped up 34-60 Little Collins Street, paying $55m for the eight level council car park in the street’s Paris End.

His ambitious redevelopment plans for that site include a mix of bars, accommodation plus a sky garden and art gallery.

Merivale already owns Tomasetti House, purchased for $43m in 2021, on nearby Flinders Lane which is currently under development and is “full steam ahead” with plans to open next year.

Hemmes has revealed the property when finished would have a three level Chinese restaurant, a dazzling rooftop bar and a basement cocktail bar and club.
