A northern Victorian football league has found itself in hot water again after a senior women’s player was handed a lengthy suspension for “striking” during a game against a gender diverse team.

Riddell Football Netball Club women’s player Caitlin Broadfoot was sanctioned last week over an on-field incident against the Mount Alexander Falcons in Harcourt on July 13.

Ms Broadfoot — listed as the deputy vice-captain of the team — is understood to have been called before a Riddell Districts Football Netball League tribunal days later on July 15.

While details of the incident have not been made publicly available, Ms Broadfoot was given a six-week suspension for “striking”, although it is not clear who the affected party or parties were.

One source with knowledge of the tribunal told the Herald Sun Ms Broadfoot had been remorseful over her alleged actions.

It comes weeks after the Riddell Districts Football Netball League — in which both Riddell and Mount Alexander compete in — banned two trans gender netballers due to their “superior stamina and physique”.

The Mount Alexander Falcons promote themselves as a “safe, inclusive and fun footy club” for women, girls and gender diverse people.

The club declined to provide comment to the Herald Sun but a statement on their website reads:

“We are an Australian football club created for and led by women and gender diverse people.

“Our club places women, girls and gender diverse people as our central focus rather than an add-on to a male-focused club.”

Days following the alleged on-field incident, Mount Alexander took to social media to offer support for those affected by the incident that weekend.

“To our wider club community, we have been supporting our players and club personnel this week, and offer the same support to any Falcons family similarly impacted by last week’s game,” the statement read.

Contact details for various support services were also provided, along with the message: “We stand together”.

Mount Alexander will celebrate a ‘trans and gender diverse celebration game’ for the final round of the regular season this weekend at their home ground in Harcourt.

The Riddell Districts Football Netball League, Mount Alexander Falcons and Caitlin Broadfoot were all contacted for comment.

Riddell Football Netball Club declined to offer a statement.
