A childcare provider has revealed new allegations against accused pedophile Joshua Brown including that he “aggressively” manhandled children in his care.
Childcare giant G8 Education informed families on Saturday that Mr Brown was at the centre of two separate investigations which were reported to the education department and Victoria Police.
They are unrelated to the more than 70 child sex offences Mr Brown was charged with earlier this month related to alleged sexual assault and using technology to offend.
In an email to families on Saturday, obtained by the Sunday Herald Sun, G8 Education revealed there were two internal investigations during his employment between October 2021 and February 2024.
In 2023, Mr Brown was investigated after he allegedly “aggressively picked up and put down and did not uphold the dignity and rights of a child in his care” while the child was upset.
The allegations were reported by three other team members.
He was handed a “formal written warning” and a performance improvement plan and took “an extended leave period” following the probe, the email read.
In another alleged incident, investigated in 2024, Mr Brown was reported to have “forcibly grabbed the arm of one child, the leg of another child and forcibly pulled off that child’s shoe”.
According to the email, Mr Brown was suspended throughout the second investigation and eventually resigned.
Despite authorities earlier this month claiming Mr Brown – who had a valid Working With Children’s Check – was not known to police, G8 Education said that the investigations were reported to Victoria Police at the time.
“These allegations were reported by G8 Education to Victoria Police, CCYP and the Department,” they said.
“All families who were impacted by the allegations were informed of the investigations and their outcomes.”
Usually, substantiated findings would spark a review of the person’s Working with Children Check.
It is understood that Mr Brown’s WWCC, however, was not reviewed, allowing him to continue working at other childcare centres across Melbourne.
Police and the state government refused to say if any action was taken when they received reports of Mr Brown’s alleged aggressive conduct towards children.
Asked whether the Victorian government had been notified about the allegations at the time, Labor MP Vicki Ward said she would not add commentary that could “hamper” police investigations.
“The government has responded at that time to the information that was available to them,” she said.
“This is an active investigation undertaken by Victoria Police and the government and I’m not going to add any commentary that could hamper or affect or restrict the absolute breadth and depth of that investigation.”
Ms Ward emphasised police were doing everything possible in their investigations to answer “every single question” the public had.
“Victoria Police will do the work that they need to do,” she said.
“I think it has been made very clear … that this is a very thorough investigation that Victoria Police are taking incredibly seriously.”
When asked if authorities were aware of the prior allegations against Mr Brown, a Victoria Police spokesperson said they were unable to respond before deadline.
