Aussie cricket captain Pat Cummins has found a left-field way to prepare for this week’s World Test Championship final – wielding the willow and drinking beer at Jeremy Clarkson’s farm.
Days before leading Australia into battle against South Africa at Lord’s for a tilt at history, the self-confessed Clarkson’s Farm fanatic took time in his busy schedule to rub shoulders with the former Top Gear host at his Cotswolds retreat, Diddly Squat.
In an exclusive Herald Sun interview at Lord’s on Sunday, Cummins said swapping the crease for the countryside soothed the soul before his mind switches completely to defending Australia’s Test Championship crown.
“It was great to go out there for a morning and see the sights,” he said.
“I’ve got a bit of a hobby farm myself and I’ve got no idea what I’m doing, so I think myself and Jeremy were able to relate a little on that.”
Cummins played backyard cricket at Clarkson’s farm and tested out a handmade new willow bat that the UK star has produced from wood grown on the property as part of a new business venture.
Clarkson said: “I’ve never been a fan of cricket. I always had too much hay fever to know what was going on.
“But at least now I’ve found a way to make some money out of it … We enjoyed showing Pat around Diddly Squat Farm, after we had (Aussie racing driver) Oscar Piastri visit us previously as well.
“The only non-Australian sportsman who’s visited was David Beckham.”
While Clarkson has often courted controversy for his political views, Cummins said he kept the conversation on cricket, a shared view of lager and farm life.
“I think you know where he stands on a lot of things,” Cummins said of Clarkson.
“No, he was great, really.”
The visit is expected to feature in series five of Clarkson’s Farm on Prime Video.
While the farm visit was a nice way to ease into life after a tumultuous Indian Premier League season, Cummins said he was now squarely focused on green and gold glory at Lord’s this week.
“The overarching feeling I think from our minds is one of excitement,” he said.
“We really want to win, to say that we’ve gone back to back.”
Cummins said defending the title would also enhance the legacy of a team he has captained since the end of 2021.
“We’ve been really successful and proud of the way we’ve played over the last probably four years,” he said.
“And I think playing a final like this is another opportunity for us to signify that success over those years.
“Everyone is pretty keen to win.”
