The Herald Sun is the best-performing major masthead in Australia over the past year, with powerful journalism and agenda-setting campaigns making it the only mass market state or national brand to grow its total digital and print audience.

The Herald Sun has also cemented its title as Australia’s biggest selling daily newspaper and secured its position as the state’s number one media brand, with 440,000 more Victorian readers in digital and print than The Age each month.

The latest Roy Morgan iris figures, released on Monday, reveal the Herald Sun’s total monthly digital and print cross-platform audience grew by 0.9 per cent to 4.831 million people during the 12 months to March.

It was the only major masthead in Australia to increase total readership over the past year, with The Age dropping 6.9 per cent during the same period.

The Herald Sun strengthened its position as Australia’s biggest selling daily newspaper, with Monday to Friday print audiences growing by 1.8 per cent to 581,000 over the 12 months to March.

The readership of the weekday Herald Sun is more than double that of The Age.

The Saturday Herald Sun remains Australia’s most-read metropolitan Saturday masthead with an audience of 612,000 (200,000 more than the Saturday Age), while 670,000 people read the Sunday Herald Sun, compared to just 383,000 for the Sunday Age.

The Herald Sun’s digital-only audience also increased by 7 per cent – or 246,000 readers – over the past month, and digital subscriptions remain strong.

The exceptional results follow a stellar period of journalism for the Herald Sun, ranging from significant national scoops to a series of important campaigns improving the lives of all Victorians.

Highlights include successfully fighting for tougher bail laws in the Suburbs Under Siege campaign, the Good Friday Appeal, which raised a record $23.8m for the Royal’s Children’s Hospital, and the Future Victoria series, in which Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged $3.2bn in new funds to our state.

The Herald Sun has consistently broken the biggest stories across news, sport and entertainment, generating international headlines with its investigations such as the shocking IVF clinic mix-up which resulted in a woman giving birth to the wrong baby.

Herald Sun editor Sam Weir said the nation’s best digital and print readership growth was reward for the hard work and talent of the masthead’s remarkable newsroom.

“Every hour of the day our unrivalled team works tirelessly to deliver the investigations and insights that really matter for you and your community,” he said.

“It could be news and views consumed on your phone, iPad, the newspaper, via video, podcasts or world-class multimedia storytelling such as our Mushroom Cook triple murder trial coverage.

“We thank all our readers, viewers and listeners for your loyalty and helping us to continue to invest in quality journalism.”
