Federal Greens leader Adam Bandt has taken election campaigning to a new level, performing a DJ set at a popular Melbourne nightclub.
The Melbourne MP stepped into the DJ booth at Revolver Upstairs in Prahran just after midnight on Saturday morning in an attempt to win over younger votes ahead of next month’s federal election.
Footage obtained by the Herald Sun shows Mr Bandt spinning the decks inside a DJ cage as revellers danced nearby.
The decision to perform at Revolver Upstairs – affectionately known as Revs – comes after an electoral redistribution resulted in Mr Bandt’s Melbourne electorate crossing the Yarra River to pick up the suburbs of South Yarra and Prahran.
In a statement to the Herald Sun, Mr Bandt said it was “great fun” to perform at Revs.
“I had a really good time,” he said.
“Back in the day I had turntables when that was a thing and then upgraded to a DJ controller and taught myself.
“I now represent this area and there’s lots of people here I’m keen to meet, and this is a good way to do it.”
Mr Bandt, who was first elected to parliament in 2010, has turned the Melbourne electorate into a Greens stronghold. At the 2022 election, he won nearly 50 per cent of the primary vote.
This time around he will come up against former Carlton legend Anthony Koutoufides and former Married At First Sight contestant Tim Smith who are both running as independent candidates.
Mr Bandt’s DJ set on Friday night comes after the Greens were forced to ditch plans to hold a dance party fundraiser in Western Australia on Anzac Day.
