A 22-year-old man allegedly went on a violent spree in the Melbourne CBD on Thursday afternoon and assaulted five people in separate attacks.
An elderly man visiting Melbourne for this weekend’s Grand Prix was one of the victims of the alleged assaults when he was targeted in an unprovoked attack on Collins St just after 1.30pm.
Police said they were called to the city centre following a number of reports of unprovoked attacks and soon arrested a man.
“Police have arrested a male on Spencer Street following a series of random assaults in Melbourne CBD,” a spokesperson said.
“Police received reports of five separate incidents of an unknown male approaching people and punching them in the Collins Street area on 13 March.
“All have been treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”
On Thursday night police charged the 22-year-old with unlawful assault, common law assault and resisting arrest.
He was held in custody and will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
