Andrew Demetriou’s little idea after he exited as boss of the AFL has turned into a big reality, with his private members club Sanctum taking flight.

Demetriou, who was AFL chief executive from 2003-14, has joined forces with sport and entertainment executive Clint Hillas in the new offering, to be based at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park, across from the MCG.

One thing he is ensuring – women will be members and are already heavily involved behind the scenes.

“What’s been more gratifying than people signing up is that it’s not a boys’ club,’’ Demetriou said.

“We’re getting women on the board and we’re all committed to the same goal of trying to make it as inclusive and diverse as possible.

“I’m confident it won’t be exclusive to men and a lot of women are and will be involved.”

A Sanctum membership, which is $5250 for a first year, will unlock premium experiences across Melbourne’s sport, entertainment, dining and cultural scenes.

On board as a foundation principal member are Collingwood star Dan McStay and his partner Kellie Drew.

“Moving from Brisbane a few years ago, I’m excited to be able to access more of the awesome events that Melbourne has each year, and I’m going to be making the most of my Moonah Links (golf) membership,’’ McStay said.

Drew, a city-based lawyer, said she was looking forward to being part of a club that “integrates both my personal and professional life”.

Partners include restaurateurs Chris Lucas and Shane Delia, as well as many other big hospitality names. Among the board and executives are Wes Maas, Gerry Ryan and Ken Poutakidis.

Demetriou said: “The club will be pretty special.”
