US politics live: Abysmal poll lays bare just how far Donald Trump’s political opponents have fallen
A newly released poll with truly shocking numbers demonstrates just how much Donald Trump’s political opponents have fallen.
Welcome to our live coverage of US politics.
A pair of polls released on Sunday, American time, demonstrated just how much his political opponents have fallen.
One of those polls, from NBC News, actually showed the Democratic Party’s approval rating falling to an unprecedently low level.
Twenty-seven per cent of respondents, barely a quarter, said they viewed the Democrats favourably. And only 7 per cent “very” favourably. Meanwhile an easy majority, 55 per cent, had an unfavourable view.
The party’s favourability was at 29 per cent in a CNN poll that came out a few hours earlier.
“The Democratic Party has reached an all-time low in popularity,” NBC reported.
“The slump is partially driven by fed-up Democrats, according to the polling data, after they watched their party lose to Trump in 2024.”
Meanwhile, Mr Trump has offered a ... dubious excuse for his failure to deliver on his pre-election promise to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, if not before.
“I’m not understating the complexity of all this, but as a candidate, you said you would have this war settled in 24 hours,” journalist Sharyl Attkisson, hardly an unfriendly voice, put to Mr Trump during an interview with him on her platform Full Measure.
“Well, I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said that. What I really mean is I’d like to get it settled, and I think I’ll be successful,” Mr Trump responded.
Hmm. Yes. Well. The thing is, the President’s remarks are on tape. We can watch them back. And don’t you know, there’s nary a hint of sarcasm in them.
