Two people were ordered onto the ground at gunpoint outside a Gold Coast police station after a bizarre stabbing incident.
The dramatic events unfolded on Friday evening after a man rang Triple 0 to say he’d been stabbed and his car stolen.
The car was then tracked by police, with two people inside ordered to get on the ground when it pulled up outside Southport Police Station.
“Police were actually actively looking for the vehicle. They located the vehicle heading into Southport. And as a result of that they conducted a follow,” Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles said.
“The vehicle actually went to Southport Police Station. Police weren’t aware of who was in the car and whether the alleged offender was in the vehicle still, so a tactical intercept took place whereby two people assisted police with inquiries.”
It quickly transpired that the two people – a man and a 17-year-old woman – were not responsible for the alleged stabbing.
Instead, they were back seat passengers in the vehicle when the driver, a 54-year-old man, was allegedly stabbed with a knife in the left side of his chest by a man who was in the front passenger seat.
Police will allege that man – a 35-year-old who is well known to them – then pushed the victim out of the car at Usher Ave in Labrador and drove off. They have since issued a warrant for his arrest.
“It will be alleged there were four people in the vehicle. They were driving around. And at one point the front passenger has stabbed the driver in the left side of his chest,” Acting Chief Supt Miles said.
“The alleged stabber had then physically removed the driver from the car, left him on the side of the road with a chest wound.
“He has then driven off in the vehicle with two passengers in the rear. It will be alleged that those two passengers didn’t know what was going on.”
After driving for a short time the alleged offender pulled over and got out of the car. The two rear seat passengers then took over the vehicle and fled to Southport Police Station with the 17-year-old at the wheel. She has since been charged with drug driving and driving without a licence.
Acting Chief Supt Miles said the motive for the stabbing was unknown, but police were investigating whether it was drug-related.
He said the stabbing victim had declined to make a formal complaint.
