The speed limit on a major Top End road will be reduced after dozens crashes were recorded on a small patch of the long thoroughfare in just five years.
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning, and Logistics said Trower Rd’s speed limit would be reduced from 70km per hour to 60km per hour between Vanderlin Dr and Parer Dr.
There were 44 crashes from 2018-2022 on the 750m stretch of road.
The change will take place from April 16.
Secure NT in a statement said a study of the area in October revealed many motorists were already travelling within the 60 km per hour speed limit range.
“This section of road is located in a high pedestrian activity area with many residential properties accessing Trower Road directly,” the statement said.
“Part of the analytics used to determine changes to speed limits include but are not limited to acknowledging the actual speed vehicles can safely travel on a stretch of road, as well as other considerations such as density and pedestrian activity.
“Formalising the speed to 60 km per hour is appropriate for this high pedestrian activity area and will reduce risk.”
The NT’s road toll currently sits at 18, compared to four this time last year.
