A military icon has visited Darwin to inspect the fine work of the city’s tri-force cadets on Sunday.

Sir Peter Cosgrove inspected the 140 members of the army, navy and air force cadets as a gallery of proud family members watched their “outstanding” drill parade.

Sir Peter was full of praise for the young people, aged between 13 and 18 years old.

“To see a drill parade where they act with such unison and with such effect is uplifting,” Sir Peter said.

“It was outstanding.”

Wing Commander David Champion said it was the first time all three forces — army, air force and navy — had marched in a combined cadet parade.

“It was not without some difficulty - all three forces have separate commands,” Mr Champion said.

“But these cadets rehearsed diligently for six hours last week and five hours yesterday for this big occasion.”

Sir Peter said events like this demonstrated the importance of the army, navy and air force cadet programs for young people.

“The cadet program teaches so many life skills - self-confidence and a sense of teamwork - to name a couple,” Sir Peter said.

“It also promotes collegiality and a sense of community.”

Navy cadet of the year, 15-year-old Xanthe Bergen, is one of those young people who benefits from the program.

“My favourite thing about being a cadet is meeting new people,” Xanthe said.

“It teaches you a lot of different life skills.

“Not just related to the navy, but also everyday things you need to know.”

Xanthe’s mother Coby Bergen was full of praise for her daughter and the program.

“I’m very proud of Xanthe,” Ms Bergen said.

“She’s done really well this year to accomplish everything and stay dedicated to her cadet responsibilities.”

Three cadets were also awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

The award takes more than 12 months to complete, and challenges recipients to demonstrate their abilities in physical recreation, skills and volunteer services.

Awardees must also complete an adventurous journey to get certified.

“It’s fantastic to see the new generation of Aussies coming through in the uniforms of the army, navy and air force,” Sir Peter said.
