A tremor has been felt through parts of Darwin, with some residents reporting their buildings shaking.
The tremor reportedly occurred at about midday on Tuesday.
Shortly after, an outpour of social media activity flowed from local Top End Facebook groups, with Territorians quick to share their experience.
On Facebook, one person said their building had “swayed” from the tremor.
“(In) Darwin city, six floor Mitchell St office rocked and swayed (sic) OMG!” they wrote.
According to Geoscience Australia’s latest earthquake data, a 5.9 magnitude quake was registered in the Banda Sea region at about 11.15am epicentral time, with more than 200 ‘felt reports’ associated with the tremor.
At 12.34pm, the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre issued a statement confirming there was no threat of a tsunami to the Australian mainland.
“(We have) detected an earthquake that has been reported as being felt near Darwin, NT,” the signal read.
“There is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.”
