City of Darwin on Tuesday announced the Trash and Treasure Shop at Shoal Bay would be closed from January 30 until February 7, as it rebrands and transitions to its new owners.

East Coast-based not-for-profit Resource Recovery Australia (RRA) was controversially awarded the contract to run the shop – soon-to-be rebranded to Reviva Darwin – in November 2024, after local disability services provider Helping People Achieve lost its tender bid to continue managing it.

RRA is a social enterprise that works in management to keep waste out of landfill and create jobs for people experiencing barriers to work.

Last financial year, RRA diverted more than 11,965tn of waste from landfill for reuses and recycling and employed 196 people.

City of Darwin faced strong community backlash for its decision to award the prized trash and treasurer tender, located at the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, to an interstate provider, this masthead reported.

As part of the changeover, the operating hours of the shop will slightly change.

Donations can still be dropped off at the front of the shop during the closure period.

Items that are accepted include car batteries, bed bases and frames, household furniture, bicycles and scooters as well as kitchen utensils and cutlery.

City of Darwin Acting CEO, Matt Grassmayr, said the shop would continue to be a great place to grab a bargain and divert materials away from landfill.

“The shop will remain the first stop residents can visit prior to throwing their items away, to see if the items can be repurposed or resold to minimise the amount of waste entering landfill,” he said.

“I would like to thank the previous provider, Helping People Achieve, in establishing the Trash and Treasure Shop.

“Reviva Darwin will offer the community a fantastic opportunity to drop off items to be recycled, reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, and provide affordable and useful items for the community.

“Resource Recovery Australia remains committed to providing employment for HPA supported employees and locals.”
