Ulysses Dancers will be dancing to celebrate and remember the life of a former treasured colleague in this year’s annual performance at the Townsville Civic Theatre.
Lift off for Leslie is dedicated to Leslie Brown, who was both a valued member and performer of the dance troupe who died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer.
Anne Roberts School of Dance principal Jane Pirani said Leslie was a gentle soul who was a mentor and role model to a generation of dancers.
“He was just amazing,” she said.
Ms Pirani said Leslie started learning dance from an early age but gave up at 10 to play ice hockey but his love of dance remained and he returned to the dance floor again at 18.
“He danced for another 20 years, so that was lovely.
“Even when he was diagnosed three years ago, he created two pieces during that time and performed as well.”
She said after Leslie passed away they decided to dedicate this year’s performance to him.
“Our theme for the whole show is lift off it was about travel originally, and we decided lift off the Leslie – just some kind of celebration.
“So everyone’s got a theme but it depends on how they interpret it.”
Lift off for Leslie involves 9 choreographers and 40 dancers from 14 to 40 join in the celebration of Leslie Brown who left the stage too early.
The performance runs at the Townsville Civic Theatre from June 20 to 22 and for tickets go to https://whatson.townsville.qld.gov.au/events/lift-off-for-leslie-the-ulysses-dancers
