The search for Townsville’s best educator is over.
After a week of searching, and a tonne of votes, Jessica Hammond of Mary Mackillop has been ranked as the best early childhood educator in the city.
Ms Hammond, who works out of the organisation’s Kirwan branch, said she was overwhelmed with joy and humbled to be viewed so favourably by the community.
“It definitely is wonderful to be voted the best. I’ve been working here for nine years and it’s been incredible,” Ms Hammond said.
She said she’d been drawn to childcare as a career after her friends and family had children and she found herself always wanting to lend a helping hand.
“I’ve always enjoyed working with kids and doing everything I could. I was always the one trying to help all my friends with their kids, anytime they needed a hand with anything.”
After nine years working in the field, she said it was still as rewarding as ever to form such strong bonds with the community.
“You get very close and you form these incredible bonds with the families and their children. Watching them grow and learn is absolutely amazing. I have a couple of the mums here and you start to build this really close bond with them over the years.”
The ever humble early childcare expert said some of the families had even come up with a new title for her.
“Some of them call me their ‘kindy-mum’, which is really nice.”
